Black Maternal and Infant Health is a 2020-2021 focus issue for NJ SPAC.
Overview According to America's Health Rankings, New Jersey ranks 47th in the nation for maternal deaths. Black mothers are seven times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white mothers, and Black babies are three times more likely to die than white babies in their first year of life. This represents the widest racial disparity in the United States. New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy has prioritized improving maternal and infant health outcomes for residents. In 2019, she launched the Nurture NJ campaign, which aims to implement a multi-faceted, multi-agency approach to enhance maternal and infant health for women and children in New Jersey. NJ SPAC Objective NJ SPAC advocated for the passage of Bill A1079/S703, which mandates that healthcare professionals and support staff involved in perinatal and maternity care undergo evidence-based implicit bias training. This requirement applies to hospitals providing inpatient maternity services, birthing centers, and medical offices offering perinatal treatment and care; licensing boards are also required to provide training programs. On March 25, 2021, A1079/S703 was passed and subsequently signed into law by Governor Murphy on May 11, 2021. Resources Nurture New Jersey |
